UPDATE: Whatcom County continues response to major flooding

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – An Emergency Proclamation remains in effect Sunday morning as major flooding continues in Whatcom County, with the highest waters from Lynden to the mouth of the Nooksack River.

Whatcom Emergency Management reports Sumas is experiencing significant flooding with Front Street under water and impassable.

Sumas Advent Christian Church at Front and Cherry Street is open as an emergency shelter.

The Sumas border crossing is re-routing southbound traffic to other Ports of Entry.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office has ordered a mandatory evacuation of Marietta and deputies are making boat checks of houses and rescuing stranded residents.

Cordata Presbyterian Church on Meadowbrook Drive in Bellingham is also serving as an emergency shelter.

Major roads including Hannegan, Badger and Slater are still closed due to flooding, and as many as 100 roads in the county are either closed or restricted because of water and debris.

Emergency Management says flood waters are contaminated and not safe to walk or wade through.
