That plume of steam doesn’t mean Mt. Baker’s going to blow

MT. BAKER, Wash. — Social media has been buzzing about video of a big steam plume that appeared over Mount Baker in this past weekend’s clear sunny skies.

But volcano expert Carolyn Driedger with the U.S. Geological Survey says the steam itself isn’t unusual, as the volcano is always letting out geothermal steam.

She says conditions were just right for us to see it when the wet weather was followed by cold and dry conditions.

Driedger says we would have more warning if an eruption were imminent.

Mount Baker last erupted 6,700 years ago.
