OLYMPIA, Wash. — A public hearing was held Monday on a cap and trade bill proposed by Governor Jay Inslee.
SB5126 would also set limits on carbon emissions by corporations.
The money collected would go into the state’s general fund.
Puget Sound energy came out in favor of the Climate Act.
A PSE spokesperson said they see an alignment with other west coast jurisdictions as an efficient way to make significant carbon reduction.
The Northwest Pulp & Paper Association said the bill would have unintended consequences, saying this bill will cause production shifts from Washington to other locations and cause greenhouse gas leakage to higher emitting carbon jurisdictions.
The measure is scheduled for executive session in the House appropriations committee Tuesday, April 20.
