BELLNGHAM, WA. – The Port of Bellingham is taking aggressive action to address climate change.
The newly adopted Climate Action Strategy aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% of 2019 levels by 2030.
The Port hopes to essentially be carbon free by 2050.
Port Commissioner Michael Shepard says the port is on the front lines of climate change.
He says Port infrastructure is at risk of rising sea levels, warming oceans are disrupting the fishing industry, and rising temperatures are also threatening local agriculture.
The Port will work to achieve the goals by reducing emissions from its tenants’ buildings, vehicles, vessels and employee commutes.
