MOUNT BAKER NATIONAL FOREST, Wash – NOAA forecasts for heavy snow in the Cascades the week of November 13-20 could lead to an early opening of the Mount Baker Ski Area this season.

The Mt. Baker web site reports the average opening day falls between November 19th and November 22nd most years.

NOAA forecasts show several feet of snow expected on the mountain, starting early next week.

While the ski area reports it now has only half of the needed base of snow to consider opening, the forecasted heavy snow, if it materializes, could be enough to lead to an opening later next week.

Last season’s La Nina weather pattern resulting in a heavy snow year on the mountain- 866 inches fell.

NOAA forecasts show about a two thirds chance of a similar La Nina weather pattern this season.
