BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Lummi Nation is among Washington tribes coming to the defense of a Seattle City Council member whose home has been targeted by protesters.
Debora Juarez is a member of the Blackfeet Nation and is the first Native American ever elected to the Seattle Council.
The Seattle Times reports that she has spoken in favor of reforming the city’s police force and reallocatiing some of its funding.
But she’s pushed back against a 50% cut, saying “we need a plan, not a percentage.”
That’s brought protesters and some profane graffiti to her home.
Lummi Chairman Lawrence Solomon joined other tribal leaders with a statement reaffirming the right of protest but condemning the actions at Juarez’s home as “unwarranted acts of violence” and calling for protection for her and her family.
