BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Lummi Nation declared a Public Health Crisis today, in order to end illegal drug use on their reservation.
According to a news release from the Lummi Indian Business Council, it was a unanimous vote with the intention of making the crisis the community’s one priority.
In the release, Chairman Jeremiah Jay Julius said “it is urgent for us to work together, as a strong community, to develop a community action plan to stop illicit drug use and begin to help heal our people.”
In an email, Chief of Police Ralph Long said the Lummi Nation Police Department is cracking down on drug dealing and illegal drug use on the reservation, increasing patrols and investigations involving the delivery of illegal substances.
