BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The final steps in the clean-up of Bellingham’s Boulevard Park get underway this spring.
The Department of Ecology says crews will be using drilling machines, fluorescent dye and surveying equipment to determine the extent of historic pollution on the north end of the park.
The contamination was left by a company that processed coal into home heating and cooking gas from the 1890’s to the 1950’s and from railroad and lumber operations.
It’s the beginning of a two year design and permitting process with construction to remove structures, cap contaminated soil and protect the shoreline planned for 2023.
Some work areas in the park will be fenced off as needed.
