BLAINE, Wash. – A cleanup plan for parts of Blaine’s waterfront is moving forward.

Cascadia Daily reports that the plan documents for two sites along the harbor are now available for public review and comment.

The Sea K Fish site and the Westman Marine site were both home to fish processing facilities in the 1950’s.

However, lax regulations led to significant soil and water pollution that is still impacting the harbor today.

Some soil cleanup has already begun at the Sea K Fish site, with future plans involving the removal of a pier.

Cleanup at the Westman site will begin later this year.

The Port of Bellingham is handling the operations at both sites, and they estimate it will cost about $14 million to fully clean them.
