BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A man and a woman from Bellingham are dead in a murder-suicide on the Lummi Reservation.

Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks says officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home on Little Beaver Road, near Gooseberry Point, Friday night just before 11:00.

They found 32-year-old Essie E. Cagey suffering gunshots to the chest and abdomen and 37-year-old Alakana L. Halemano dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

Cagey later died at the hospital.

Cagey had a protection order against Halemano for a prior domestic assault in 2017 and witnesses say the two had been arguing before they heard gunshots.

Two other adults and three children who were in the home weren’t injured.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, free and confidential support is available by calling either Lummi Victims of Crime at 360-312-2015 or Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services at 360-715-1563.
