SEATTLE, WASH. – The Coast Guard’s newest cutter is in Seattle and it honors a Washington legend.

It’s named after Douglas Munro, who grew up in Cle Elum.

Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Rachel Polish says Munro is their only member to ever receive the medal of honor.

“The motto for the cutter is, ‘gallantry in action,” and that really speaks to Douglas Munro’s legacy and what he means to the Coast Guard as well as our nation,” Polish says.

He was honored after he died while saving the lives of 500 marines during World War II.

Munro’s niece was on hand for Saturday’s commemoration ceremony.
