BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The City of Bellingham has opened a winter shelter for unhoused young adults at Civic Field.
Community and Economic Development Manager Tara Sundin says the city acted when Northwest Youth Services said they wanted to operate a shelter.
“Finding people to operate shelters is typically one of our challenges,” said Sundin. “So, we were really grateful that they stepped forward.”
Jason McGill with Northwest Youth Services says they already have a shelter for adolescents and having a place specifically for 18-to-24-year-olds is important.
“Because they’re still young adults. They’re still learning and they also need a space where they can feel safe and heard and valued,” said McGill.
The overnight-only shelter at the Civic Field locker room opened on Monday, December 13th, for 25 people and will operate through March 1st.
Northwest Youth Services welcomes support for this and its other services through donations or volunteers.
