Bellingham stores dodge a bullet as big retailers announce closures

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Macy’s, Kmart and Sears stores are starting off the new year with more closures.

But the Bellingham and Burlington Macy’s stores and the Bellingham Kmart are safe for now.

Macy’s is closing 11 stores and laying off 5,000 employees but neither local store is on the list.

Sears and Kmart will also be closing a total of 103 stores between March and April, which include six Seattle and Tacoma locations.
