Women’s hockey wasn’t even an Olympic sport yet when Monique Lamoureux-Morando started playing hockey, but she and her twin sister, Jocelyne, quickly learned the sport after playing at Shattuck St. Mary’s in Minnesota. A boarding school dubbed the “Hogwarts of Hockey” that produced the NHL star Sydney Crosby. After high school, the twins ended up playing college hockey for the Minnesota Golden Gophers while their stats put them in the top echelon of Women’s hockey.
Lamoureux has been a fixture of the US national team since she helped them secure a Silver medal in the Olympics at Vancouver in 2010 after losing in the final to perennial rivals Team Canada. Once again, the USA Women’s team brought home Silver in 2014 with Canada taking home the Gold. This year in Pyeongchang, however, the US Women’s team finally took home the Gold and the Lamoureux twins were once again front and center. Lamoureux scored the equalizer to force overtime in the final game, then her sister Jocelyne scored the winner in a shootout finally leading team USA to victory over the Canadians.
Lamoureux is not just active on the ice, but has participated in the social dynamics of her sport as well. She was part of a group of female hockey players that held out for better conditions and a livable wage from USA Hockey. Plus, she has proven herself behind the mic as a play-by-play person and color commentator which she did while completing a Masters degree in Kinesiology in 2015. She is now beginning a new chapter in her hockey career. Lamoureux has joined the NHL network as a TV broadcaster and studio analyst, and made her debut on national television Friday.
