Spring Tradition Carries Health Risk

Washington State -- The Washington Department of Health is warning parents about the risks of giving kids live chicks and ducklings this spring.

Health officials want families to know the annual tradition carries the danger of salmonella poisoning.

Kate Lynch with the Health Department says ten people in our state got sick with the harmful bacteria last year from handling chicks, ducks and other poultry.

Lynch says half the cases in Washington were children under age 13.

She also says if you plan to take kids to petting farms make sure they don’t nuzzle or kiss the animals.
