Delbene Calls On Congress To Unlock Cell Phones

Washington State -- New proposed legislation may make it possible to unlock your new cell phone and go to another carrier.

1st District Democratic Congresswoman Suzan DelBene is co-sponsoring the “Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act” with the House Judiciary Committee.

The legislation would allow consumers to unlock their cell phones and switch to the carrier of their choice once their contractual obligation to the company is met.

Under The Digital Millennium Copyright Act enacted last October, only people who bought their phones prior to January 26 of this year can do so.

DelBene says the proposed legislation would keep the marketplace competitive and fair.
