Catholics Jubilant Over New Pope

Bellingham, Wash. -- A local Catholic priest says Wednesday’s announcement of the new Pope brings a sense of the new world to the old church.

Pope Francis is the first head of the Roman Catholic Church to come from South America.

Father Scott Connolly with the Church of the Assumption in Bellingham says local Catholics are excited about the possibilities that the new Pope brings to the church.

He says the decision could also make more Hispanics feel at home in the Catholic Church.

Even the way that Catholics found out about the new pope has modernized.

Father Connolly says many local Catholics were watching on their computers as the white smoke poured from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
