Officials say crews worked quickly during non-departure flight hours this week to move screening x-ray machines and a walk-thru metal detector to a new screening checkpoint location.
The move frees up about 3,000 square feet of space in what was a very crowded ticketing area in the commercial terminal.
Airport Aviation Director Daniel Zenk says the new 6,000 square foot screening area can accommodate an additional line that will help ease congestion caused by an increase in passenger traffic.
He says passenger growth is a result of the airlines adding more flight destinations.
He says more Canadians and people from Whatcom, Skagit and King counties are flying out of Bellingham.
The upgrades are part of a $38 million expansion project that is expected to be completed by next January.
