Local Unemployment Up Sharply

Preliminary numbers from the Employment Security Department show a big jump in local unemployment in January.

The data shows the rate rose one-and-a-half percentage points to 8.6 percent in Whatcom County, up from a revised rate of 7.1 percent in December as nearly 1,400 local workers joined the ranks of the unemployed.

If the number holds, January’s unemployment rate would be slightly higher than the 8.5 percent we saw a year ago.
