Bill To Abolish Death Penalty Heard In Committee

Olympia, Wash.  (Metro)  -- A bill that would ban the death penalty in Washington is being considered by a House committee.

Seattle Representative Reuven Carlyle says he introduced the bill because of the possibility of an innocent person being executed and the high cost of death-penalty trials and appeals.

Representatives from the American Civil Liberties Union, the League of Women Voters, and the Faith Action Network were among those testifying in favor of the bill Wednesday.

Carlyle has unsuccessfully tried to get similar measures passed in previous sessions.
