Negotiations For Background-Check Bill Stall

Olympia, Wash.  (Metro)  -- A key lawmaker says a bill that would require universal background checks for gun purchases may not pass during the current legislative session.

House Judiciary Committee chair Jamie Pedersen tells says that he and other supporters of the bill are seeking alternatives to a compromise offered by gun-rights activist Alan Gottlieb.

It includes a request by Gottlieb for lawmakers to end a de-facto database of firearms owners.

Pedersen says the bill is a few votes short of passage in the House and may not even go up for a vote in the GOP-controlled Senate.
