Bills Would Allow Cities, Counties To Increase Car-tab Tax

Bellingham, Wash.  (Metro)  -- State lawmakers are considering legislation that would allow cities and counties to increase the car-tab tax for local transportation projects.

The measures would be in addition to the $10 billion transportation package introduced last week by House Democrats.

Under the bills, local governments would be allowed to add another $20 to the car tab tax for local road projects, and King County would be able to increase car tabs even more for bus service.

The measures are opposed by activist Tim Eyman, who says no tax increase should be allowed without a vote of the public.
