Federal Budget Cuts Threaten Border Jobs

Whatcom County, Wash. -- The impending federal budget sequestration could hit Whatcom County especially hard.

Border Patrol agents and Custom officers could see job cuts and furlough days if the automatic spending cuts take effect Friday.

Local Chamber of Commerce President Ken Oplinger says the cuts would be bad for federal workers and for the local economy.

Oplinger says Customs officers would no longer have the work hours to deal with big line-ups on busy holidays and weekends.

He says that could mean longer wait-times at the border and the airport and it could make fewer Canadians want to shop in Whatcom County.

It is expected that 3,400 Boarder Patrol agents and 3,400 Customs Officers would lose their jobs nationwide if the cuts kick in.
