Water Quality Projects Get Funding

Bellingham, Wash., Blaine, Wash. -- Seven local projects aimed at improving water quality have been picked to receive state and federal funding this summer.

Sandy Howard with the State Department of Ecology says 72 clean water projects across the state will share $162 million in loans and grants starting in July.

She says the state expects the funding to fuel more than 1,700 jobs.

The City of Bellingham will get $2.6 million in grant and loan money to clean up and improve salmon habitat along Squalicum Creek.

Resources for Sustainable Communities will get nearly $62,000 to create an education campaign to protect the creek.

Bellingham will also get $1.6 million in loans to replace two storm water mains.

Blaine will get $800,000 to connect more homes to the city’s sewer system.
