Heavy Defense Worker Furloughs Possible In Northwest

Washington State  (Metro)  -- A large number of Northwest Defense Department workers will see 20-percent pay cuts from late April to late September if automatic federal budget cuts planned for March 1 take effect.

"The Seattle Times" says the furloughs could affect some 32,000 civilian workers at Joint Base Lewis McChord and at Navy facilities around the region.

The cuts will happen unless Congress reaches a deal to reduce the federal deficit.
