Newton Massacre Topic Of Local Mental Health Forum

Bellingham, Wash. -- Whatcom County’s largest provider of mental health services is hosting a community forum on mental illness and public safety in the wake of the Newtown massacre.

David Kleiber with Whatcom Counseling and Psychiatric Clinic says the forum is not about gun control.

He says it is about getting the community to be more comfortable discussing mental health issues.

He says the meeting will cover ways to recognize and respond to mental illness and if professional intervention could have prevented the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.

The discussion is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bellingham High School auditorium.
