Canadians Near Border Choose Whatcom Over Vancouver

Whatcom County, Wash. -- A retail strategist in B.C. says Canadians who live close to the border may be more willing to drive to Bellingham than to make the trip to downtown Vancouver.

Border wait times were in excess of two hours on Monday as B.C. residents were wrapping up a three-day holiday weekend.

David Ian Gray with Dig360 consulting says some Canadian shoppers are just looking for a bargain.

He says other Canadian shoppers consider shopping south of the border sort of a mini vacation, as many of them don't have the budget for a big vacation anymore.

New research suggests that B.C. residents make an average of five trips to Whatcom County each year.

Most are coming home with gas, groceries and clothes.
