Bill Would Create Tougher Laws Against Squatters

Olympia, Wash.  (Metro)  -- A Pierce County lawmaker wants to curb illegal activity at rental properties.

State Senator Mike Carrell of Lakewood says his measure, which is being considered in the Senate Committee on Law and Justice, is designed to deal with the problem of squatters who occupy vacant properties.

Carrell says police would be authorized under the bill to "expeditiously remove" squatters who have no legal standing to be at a property.

The Senator says current law classifies such issues as civil matters.
