Ocean Acidification Worries Local Shellfish Industry

Bellingham, Wash. -- Shellfish industry officials are concerned that low pH levels or “ocean acidification” is causing hatcheries to lose more and more oyster larvae.

Experts say one-third of carbon dioxide emitted from burning fossil fuels is absorbed by the ocean causing pH levels to lower.

Taylor shellfish farm spokesperson, Bill Dewey says his company is doing research and using new water monitoring technology to deal with the problem.

Dewey also says the technology has allowed them to identify corrosive water, treat it, and recover local oyster production lost in recent years.
