Bellingham Shoreline Program Approved

Bellingham, Wash. -- The State Department of Ecology has approved Bellingham’s updated program that regulates development along Bellingham Bay and other shorelines in the city.

City planner Steve Sundin says the program helps protect 38 miles of shorelines along rivers, lakes and streams in the city.

He says the updates include increased protection for the Lake Whatcom watershed.

Sundin says the Shoreline Master Program is not intended to stop people from building.

He says the updated program will become law on February 26th.

Cities and counties statewide are updating their shoreline programs according to the state’s Shoreline Management Act.

The Department of Ecology must review each local program.
