New Hires Could See Lower Training Wage

Olympia, Wash. -- A bill that passed out of the State Senate Commerce and Labor Committee yesterday would allow employers to pay some new hires only 75 percent of the state's minimum wage.

It’s called a training wage.

Senator Bob Hasegawa says the bill doesn't create jobs, and would only turn new hires into "wage slaves."

Hasegawa says any reduction to the minimum wage will further punish families and businesses who are recovering from the economic downturn.

Employers currently can pay new hires 85 percent of Washington’s $9.19 minimum wage under certain criteria, and the bill further reduces that percentage.
