Annual Border Celebration Comes To An End

Blaine, Wash. -- The International Peace Arch Association is canceling its annual “Hands Across the Border” celebration.

The association says rising costs and diminished donations have made the event impossible to continue.

The annual re-dedication of the International Peace Arch monument was meant to celebrate the longstanding peace between Canada and the United States.

The event has been hosted 90 times at Peace Arch Park in Blaine and Surrey, B.C. on the second Sunday in June for the past 94 years.

Until now the event was only interrupted for two years by WWII and two years because of major construction projects.
