County Leaders Accused Of Misusing Money

WHATCOM, Wash. -- A Whatcom County council member is accusing other county leaders of taking state grant money and setting it aside it for the wrong purpose.

The county purchased Lily Point Marine Park on Point Roberts in 2010 using money from the county's conservation futures fund, and applied for a $1.5 million state grant to pay back the fund.

But when the county got the grant money, council member Barbara Brenner says the administration at that time put it into the parks improvement fund instead.

Brenner says an ordinance at that time clearly stated that the grant money was supposed to go back to the conservation futures fund.

Council members will vote on a resolution Tuesday that would make the switch official.

County finance manager Brad Bennett wrote in the council agenda that the grant money doesn't have the same spending restrictions as money collected through the conservation futures fund tax levy.
