Whatcom County Most Prosperous In State

WHATCOM, Wash. -- A new study ranks Whatcom County as the most prosperous in the state.

Researchers at Puget Sound Business Journal’s parent company recently completed a study comparing the total personal income growth of 455 major U.S. counties between 1986 and 2011.

Researchers say the growth rate of our area’s collective wages, dividends, and welfare checks was the highest in the state over the 25 year study period.

Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce CEO Ken Oplinger says our population growth in recent years has urbanized the county’s economy resulting in the creation of higher paying government and education jobs.

The study ranks Benton and Clark counties the second and third most prosperous in Washington.

Douglas County, Colorado holds the top spot in the U.S.
