Local Scholars May Get A Break In Tuition

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Local university students may avoid a tuition hike if school officials have their way.

The president of Western - along with leaders from the five other public four year higher education institutions in our state - are asking for $225 million in government funding in exchange for freezing tuition rates over the next two years.

Outgoing governor Chris Gregoire proposed the freeze a few weeks ago, but school leaders want the state to make a larger investment in higher education to ease costs for students.

Western Washington University’s Associate Vice President of University Relations Sherry Burkey says that while the Council of Presidents’ proposal will cost about a billion dollars over time, it will allow schools to freeze tuition at current levels and bring about an eventual 50/50 cost-share split between students and the state.
