Elaine Fischer with the state Department of Labor and Industries says Washington is one of ten states that adjust minimum wage according to changes in the federal consumer price index, which rose 1.67 percent during the 12 months ending last August.
The index measures the cost of goods and services needed for day to day living.
Fischer says if the cost of living does not go up in 2013 because of the fiscal cliff or another recession, then our state's minimum wage would stay the same.
Washington already has the highest minimum wage in the nation.
It's also two dollars above the federal minimum wage.
