King County Deputies Urge Against Celebratory Gunfire

SEATTLE, Wash.  (Metro)  -- King County Sheriff John Urquhart is urging residents not to shoot their guns to celebrate the new year.

Urquhart says shooting guns into the air is dangerous, as the bullet must land somewhere and can cause serious injury or death.

The sheriff says people are killed across the country each year by celebratory gunfire.

Urquhart says people caught firing weapons in King County will be charged with reckless endangerment, which is punishable by a year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.
