Fiscal Cliff Could Hurt Whatcom/Canada Relations

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- If our country goes over the fiscal cliff at the end of the year, a local business expert says it would affect Whatcom County's economy in several ways.

Ken Oplinger with the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce says the deep federal spending cuts that would take effect could hurt U-S relations with Canada, which is one of Whatcom County's biggest trading partners.

He says the threat of the fiscal cliff is also keeping some local businesses from hiring or expanding, because of the tax increases that would take effect in 2013 if congress doesn't reach an agreement.
