3-Year-Old Injured In Crash on Smith Road

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. -- A 3-year-old girl was seriously injured after a rear-end collision in Whatcom County Sunday night.

Witnesses say a 20-year-old Bellingham man stopped his car at the flashing red light on East Smith Road at the intersection of Everson Goshen Road around 10:11 p.m.

He had just started moving again when a car driven by Jolene Sam, 31, from La Conner slammed into the back of the man’s vehicle at high speed.

Sam had her 8-year-old daughter, a 3-year-old friend of the family, and two dogs in the car.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Sergeant Larry Flynn says no one in her car was wearing a seat belt.

Sam was arrested for investigation of DUI, driving with a suspended license, and vehicular assault.

The 3-year-old had to be flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Sgt. Flynn says everyone else had just bumps and bruises.

Sam’s 8-year-old daughter was released to family friends. The two dogs were taken to the Whatcom Humane Society.
