Mount Baker Highway Still Closed

WHATCOM, Wash. -- The Mount Baker Highway will likely remain closed east of Maple Falls at least until tomorrow.

Heavy wind and snow has already sent more than 100 trees down onto the highway, and the trees continue to fall.

Dave Chesson with the state Department of Transportation says the extreme wind has been making it unsafe for crews to work in the area.

He says conditions yesterday were "terrible."

The Mount Baker Ski Area is also closed.

DOT crews have cut a path for emergency access to the ski area, and Chesson says nobody is trapped except for people who want to be there.

The road closed Thursday 10 miles west of the ski area.

The DOT is bringing in extra equipment to clear the road.

Chesson says their goal is to get the road open by the end of today, if the weather cooperates.
