Mount Baker Highway Remains Closed

WHATCOM, Wash. -- The Mount Baker Highway is closed east of Maple Falls after heavy wind, rain and snow caused nearly 100 trees to topple onto the highway in less than 24 hours.

Dave Chesson with the state Department of Transportation says more than six feet of snow has fallen on the highway between Glacier and the Mount Baker Ski Area since last Friday.

He says this is the most trees he's ever seen fall over the highway all at one time.

DOT crews have cut a path for emergency access to the Mt. Baker Ski Area.

Some ski area staff were trapped by the closure. Crews will return to the area today to continue cutting and removing trees.
The highway will remain closed until Friday at the earliest.
