Experts Give Advice On Helping Children Deal With CT Tragedy

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Child experts give advice on explaining events like the recent Newtown shooting rampage to youngsters.

Tragic events of the last few weeks have educators offering solutions to parents about how to best address their child’s concerns.

Scholastic Classroom Magazine’s Editor at Large Suzanne McCabe spoke to KGMI and advises that parents should not project their own fears on their children.

McCabe says that parents should gear their vocabulary for the very young ages 6 to 7 years old.

Say as little as possible as you listen to your child’s fears and anxieties.

Gauge what they already know about the situation.

Parents should be also be prepared for older kids to ask more reality-based questions.

Most importantly, McCabe tells parents to explain that these are isolated events, that people in these communities have come together to help those affected by the tragedy, and then move on.

Parents can find these tips and more at scholastic.com.
