Storms Make For Great Run, Bad Business

WHATCOM, Wash. -- Officials at the Mt. Baker Ski Area say that the highway closure is hurting business right during the holidays.

Gwyn Howat, operations manager with the Mt. Baker Ski Area, says the storm that sent trees onto the highway is also creating perfect conditions for skiers & snowboarders.

She says storm chasers are flocking to Baker from around the world because of the snow.

The deep snow also poses certain safety risks.

Howat says skiers can become trapped and suffocate by falling into deep loose snow or the pits formed by deep snow around trees.

She says skiers must stay with a partner and stay within the ski area boundaries in deep snow conditions.

Skiers can find more safety tips at www.deepsnowsafety.org.
