Evergreen State Goes Green In More Ways Than One

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Washingtonians get high marks in recycling from the state Department of Ecology.

Officials reported yesterday that in 2011, people in our state recycled more than 50 percent of their trash.

It’s the first time the rate has exceeded goals set by state law in 1989.

Department of Ecology Spokesperson Gretchen Newman says data show people recycled over 185 thousand tons more trash than they did in 2010 and that they have tossed away 170 tons less trash.

Experts say that by recycling, Washingtonians have prevented 3.2 million tons of greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere.
