Whooping Cough Kills Infant Amid Decline Of WA Epidemic

KING, Wash. -- One King County infant dies of whooping cough just as epidemic levels in the state begin to decline.

State health officials were surprised today to learn that a newborn baby died last week as a result of pertussis.

It is the first whooping cough related death in the state since four others occurred between 2010 and 2011.

State Department of Health spokesperson Tim Church says that while whooping cough is cyclical, adults should get their shots to help protect infants and children who are most at risk of contracting the illness.
