WA Salmon Have New Hope With State Grant

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A state grant is expected to increase salmon populations and jobs in Whatcom County.

The Washington Salmon Recovery Funding board just announced that organizations in our area received nearly three quarters of a million dollars to fix barriers to positive salmon migration.

The last two decades have seen a decrease in certain salmon species in Washington.

State Recreation and Conservation Office spokesperson Susan Zemek tells KGMI that conservation groups in Whatcom County received a portion of more than $19 million awarded to organizations in 27 counties around the state.

She also says that her office is expected to release a report showing salmon population progress by mid January.
