Same-Sex Couples Exchange Wedding Vows

SEATTLE, Wash.  (Metro)  -- Gay and lesbian couples across Washington got married yesterday, the first day same-sex partners could legally tie the knot after the state's law allowing the unions became effective last week.

Vows were exchanged between same-sex couples in Washington beginning at a minute past midnight yesterday morning, 72 hours after the first marriage licenses were issued.

About 150 couples got married at Seattle City Hall alone, where five separate chapels were set up to accommodate the unions.

Last month, Washington, Maine, and Maryland became the first states to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote.
