Fire Damages Pedestrian Bridge In Downtown B'ham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A late night fire on Friday severely damaged a pedestrian bridge spanning Whatcom Creek in downtown Bellingham.

Nearby residents helped a woman living under the bridge to escape the fire, and reported seeing flames as high as 15 feet.

It took fire crews and other workers several hours to fully extinguish the stubborn fire.

Originally part of a railway crossing running north from York to Ohio Streets, the bridge is closed until repairs can be made.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
