Deep Fried Turkeys – Does The Risk Outweigh The Reward

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Many people may be planning to deep fry a turkey for this Thanksgiving, but the state Fire Marshals Office is issuing some warnings about the dangers of deep frying your bird.

Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Barbara McMullen says turkey fryers can easily tip over and dump hot oil, causing a risk of serious burns or an explosive grease fire.

She says never use turkey fryers in a garage or on a wooden deck, and never overfill the fryer.

If you are going to fry a turkey, make sure the turkey is completely thawed and keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby.

The National Safety Consultant Underwriters Laboratories says the fryers used to produce those great-tasting birds are not worth the risks, and they have decided not give any turkey fryers their seal of approval.
