Ski Area To Open By Coming Holiday

MT. BAKER, Wash. -- The Mt. Baker Ski area will open in time for the Thanksgiving holiday thanks to a storm that brought 20 inches of new snow in 24 hours.

The ski area is set to begin limited operation tomorrow morning at nine with at least 41 inches of wet snow at heather meadows and 50 inches on top of pan dome.

Ski area operations manager Gwyn Howat says crews on the mountain are currently working on avalanche control.

Howat says the main runs will be open, and they will decide this afternoon, after the current weather system moves through, whether they will also be able to open the lower white salmon base area.

Hikers are also being told to stay out of the ski area, because some avalanches have already occurred at the middle to higher elevations.
